The market town of Romsey in the county of Hampshire lies on the River Test, in the scenic Test Valley that is popular with walkers, nature lovers and above-all, anglers who come for the trout fishing. The town is dominated by the imposing Romsey Abbey, built during the 10th century as a Benedictine foundation where a nunnery had been led by Elflaeda, daughter of King Edward The Elder. St. Ethelflaeda was sanctified for various acts that included the chanting of psalms whilst standing naked in the freezing River Test late at night. Viking raiders had burned down the church at the nunnery but the stone abbey replaced it and its religious community continued to flourish. The Normans rebuilt the abbey in the early 12th century and by 1240, more than a hundred nuns were living in the community.
Romsey offers the visitor plenty to see, do an enjoy with good shopping, a choice of restaurants, pubs and bars as well as visitor, cultural and historic attractions including the magnificent stately home of Broadlands, the scenic Hillier Gardens and arboretum, Paultons Park children's theme park and of course, Romsey Abbey.
