Romney Marsh

The Romney Marsh is a wetland area in the county of Kent that are rich in history, story and legend; a place of outstanding natural beauty that is sparsely populated and contains unique geology, flora, fauna and wildlife. Today we find the River Rother flowing into the sea below Rye but until 1287, its mouth lay between Romney and Lydd. It was a severe storm that hit in 1287 bringing shingle from Dungeness that blocked the outlet of the Rother; shingle and mud flooded the town and marked an end to the prosperity of the village. Part of the old village moved inland to become New Romney.

Visitors today enjoy walking along the Royal Military Canal or exploring the beaches of Dungeness Head and St. Mary's Bay and discovering the wonderful heritage of this incredible landscape. The historic streets here and in New Romney, have interesting shops, eateries and pubs alongside the old almshouses founded in 1610 and just adjacent, Plantagenet House and No 3 Old Stone Cottage constructed in the early 14th century. With the most stunning natural scenery, fishing, sandy beach and wonderful sights, Romney Marsh and New Romney have something for everyone.
