Rolvenden Layne

Rolvenden Layne is a rural hamlet in the Ashford District of Kent, in south-east England. It neighbours the town of Rolvenden, and occupies a sprawling area of farmland, within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the South Kent conservation area.

The hamlet is so spread out because it developed mainly from the displacement of the inhabitants of the former village of Streyte, which was largely burned down in 1665, in the purges of the Great Plague. The hamlet's church, pub and just a few of the farms are originals of that period, as well as The Tudor house, where John Wesley later preached in the 18th century. Streyte has since been rebuilt ans the two small hamlets form one congruous community.

Great Maytham Hall, which is located between Rolvenden and Rolvenden Layne, was rented by Frances Hodgson Burnett from 1898 t0 1907, where a blocked-up door in an old walled garden inspired her to write the literary classic, "The Secret Garden".
