Rockcliffe

The village of Rockcliffe in the county of Cumbria lies between the rivers Esk and Eden that contribute much to the heritage here. With a history that includes Scottish raiders and a 16th century castle, salt and whisky smuggling, a commercial port handling timber and Welsh slates and a ship building industry in the 18th century; Rockcliffe has a fascinating and varied past. The church here dates back to the early 19th century; St. Mary's Church was designed by James Stewart of Carlisle and has several stained glass windows by John Scott and John Hardman.

This peaceful village still shows signs of the past in its buildings and some remnants of the old wooden jetties as well as a ship weathervane on the church spire and the old Norse Cross that stands near St. Mary's church, dating from the late 19th century. The modern is reflected in the Eden Benchmark sculpture on the village green overlooking the Eden. In the village are ample amenities and shops and the surrounding area offers a wealth of things to do see and enjoy for the visitor.
