Rochester is a town in the county of Kent that was a favourite of Charles Dickens who lived nearby. He based many of his novels in the area and the town has been described in the Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations and The Mystery of Edwin Drood England. Rochester has grown from a small Saxon village to a historic city since the Romans came in 43AD and made Rochester one of their most important towns. Located on the River Medway, Rochester is famed for its cathedral and castle as well as the epic siege here in 1215. Other important historic buildings include the Guildhall, Corn Exchange, Restoration House and Eastgate House.
The imposing Cathedral is the second oldest in England and was consecrated in AD604; the present building initiated by Bishop Gundulf in 1080. The architecture is incredible, reflecting Norman, Gothic and Early-English Perpendicular. With a crypt, medieval wall paintings and a magnificent 15th century chapter room doorway, Rochester Cathedral is on every visitor’s itinerary. The Cathedral sits alongside Rochester Castle, with the tallest Keep in the land. The town centre here offers a wealth of choice when looking to dine, drink, be entertained or enjoy culture; with its range of restaurants, bars, galleries and specialist shops. In the summer months, the esplanade at Rochester is the ideal place to stroll along the River Medway.
