Ripon is a cathedral city and market town in North Yorkshire, England. The city is situated on two tributaries of the River Ure. Ripon is best known for the Ripon Cathedral which is architecturally significant, and the Lightwater Valley theme park, which features Europe's longest roller coaster, "The Ultimate". The ruins of Fountains Abbey are also close by, at only two miles to the south west of the city. Founded in 1132, this Cistercian monastery is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian houses in England.
Ripon is also a popular tourist destination due to its close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Studley Royal Park and this historic Ripon Racecourse — a thoroughbred racecourse affectionately known as the "Garden Racecourse", in additional to many the many other interesting facts about the cultural and religious development of the town over the millenia.
