Richmond is a market town and popular tourist attraction situated on the River Swale by the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was founded in 1071 on lands granted to Alan Rufus by William the Conqueror. The town is a possible namesake of King Richard III who grew up in nearby Middleham Castle. Built in 1086, the ruins of the castle are now a popular local attraction, as are the spectacular Richmond Falls, which dominate the lower part of the river.
The Wensleydale region is known for its long-distance walks and for the Semer Water lake, which is a high moorland lake popular for boating, water-skiing and fishing. Richmond, along with neighbouring, Leyburn and Hawes, is a popular destination with visitors due to the many scenic walks in the area, for its fascinating history, convenient location, and facilities that include several pubs, shops, tearooms, and hotels. There is a regular bus service between Leyburn, Hawes, Bedale and Richmond.
