Retford is a market town in the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of England. It is prettily situated in the valley of the River Idle, with the Chesterfield Canal running through the town centre. The village of Ordsall adjoins Retford, though the two are divided by the River Idle, as well as the East Coast Main Line railway. Its busy market square features an ornate French-inspired Victorian Town Hall, and a war memorial designed by architect Leonard W. Barnard of Cheltenham. Cannon Square, just over from Market Square, displays a Russian cannon that was captured during the Siege of Sevastopol at the end of the Crimean War in 1856.
There is a good choice of holiday accommodation in the town, along with good shopping prospects and ample entertainment venues including two theatres, The Majestic Theatre, and Retford Little Theatre.
