Reigate is an historic market town situated within the London commuter belt in Surrey, England. It enjoys a pleasant location at the foot of the North Downs, adjoining the neighbouring town of Redhill. Reigate is famous as the setting for the Sherlock Holmes short story "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire" in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
Numerous neolithic flint mines have been discovered on a ridge by the towns, with additional Bronze Age barrows on Reigate Heath, which indicate that there was once an ancient settlement at the site. A Roman tile kiln from around AD 92 was also discovered in Reigate and parts of the town's main road follow the pre-Norman Conquest road pattern. Many of the finds of the area can be seen in the museum of the Holmesdale Natural History Club on Croydon Road.
