Redcar

Redcar is a traditional seaside resort in the North East of England, neighbouring Middlesbrough and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The town boasts eight miles of golden sands, as well as excellent transport links to the wider area, which have made Redcar a popular holiday destination since the mid-19th century, although the town was founded as a fishing settlement in the early 14th century. Its name describes the area in which it is situated, which was one of marsh land, or "reed marsh" which is derived from the Old English "rēad" and the Old Scandinavian "kjarr".

Redcar's early prosperity was reliant on trade with the neighbouring market town of Coatham, until the 1846 when the Middlesbrough and Redcar Railway brought further trade and industry, and the increased accessibility allowed Redcar to flourish as a Victorian tourist resort. The Redcar Racecourse was completed soon after in 1875 along with a pier. The resort offers numerous unique shops, boutiques, and antique and jewellery dealers, along with the obligatory donkey rides, ice cream and candy floss, amusements, and rides on the prom. Redcar also has a number of public parks that were purpose built to make the town an attractive place to visit.

The resort boasts several notable features. The Stray — a 2-mile long strip of coastal grassland — is open to the public, and is home to a variety of sea birds, making this a popular location for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Additionally, the Redcar coastline, like much of the coastline of North-East England, is fossil-rich, with an especially high concentration of Gryphaea (or "Devil's Toenails") local to Redcar.

Redcar is also home to the world's oldest surviving lifeboat, the "Zetland", which can be viewed at the seafront museum.
