Reading is a large town in the county of Berkshire that was, in the medieval period, the site of an important monastery with strong links to royalty. Reading Abbey was founded by Henry I in 1121 and is the place where he is buried. The founding of the abbey here led to the town becoming a place of pilgrimage and changing the face and fortunes of the town. Reading today attracts pilgrims for different reasons; with music festivals and other events throughout the year, making this a lively place to visit
Visitors will enjoy exploring the medieval abbey ruins, the joys of boating on the rivers Thames and Kennet, the lush scenery and wildlife of the surrounding Thames Valley countryside and a host of historic sites. Excellent shopping, a diverse and broad range of dining, cultural attractions, museums and of course some of England's biggest and most popular music festivals, offer the opportunity for a packed itinerary.
