Ramsgate is an English seaside town on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent, England, which was once separated from the mainland by the wide river Wantsum. It has been a major English seaside resort since the arrival of the steam boat in the 19th century, which provided easier access to the island than had previously been possible. Ramsgate is a Cinque port, one of an historic federation of ports providing trade between England and France across the English Channel. The town has some of the largest marinas and ferry ports on the English south coast, with numerous bars and restaurants to serve the thousands of visitors it receives each summer. The cliff-sheltered sandy bays of the island and its accessibility from London make the town one of the most popular seaside resorts of the South East.
