Pudsey

Pudsey is a moderately sized market town that has recently joined the City of Leeds, in West Yorkshire, England. It is located halfway between the Bradford and Leeds city centres, in a region known as Brontë country, for the famous literary family that once lived here.

The town itself is probably best known for being the namesake of the BBC's Children in Need fundraiser mascot "Pudsey Bear", which was designed in 1985 by Joanna Ball, granddaughter of the town's mayor. Pudsey is referred to in the Domesday Book as "Podechesaie" or "Podechesai". Prior to that, in the early 6th century, the area which is now Pudsey is believed to have been the centre of the large Kingdom of Elmet, which remained independent of the Angles for 200 years longer than the majority of the settlements of the area.

Haworth House, the home of the Brontës, is one of the more notable attractions of the area, along with The Brontë Parsonage Museum. Other major attractions the local area include the Royal Armouries, Harewood House, the Henry Moore Institute, and the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The neighbouring Victorian village of Saltaire is also a very popular attraction for visitors as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With numerous stately homes to visit, steam trains to travel on, and the beautiful landscape of West Yorkshire to explore, Pudsey is an excellent place from which to enjoy that perfect English holiday.
