portslade

The coastal town of Portslade is also an area of the city of Brighton and Hove that is nestled in a picturesque South Downs valley. This superb location is rural and rich in diverse countryside views and the town blends well with its flint buildings, village green and small parish church of St Nicolas that dates from 1150. Originally built a mile inland, the settlement at Portslade grew in the 16th century and prospered with the coming of the trains in the mid 19th century. When the railway from Brighton came, so did a rise in population, a housing boom and rapid development of the coastal area, with the vast majority of houses here built in the Victorian and Edwardian era.

Today the town continues to thrive, with good amenities, shopping, pubs and eateries throughout the coastal and inland areas of Portslade. The town is well designed with pretty parks and open spaces coupled with flint and timbered buildings to create a charming atmosphere. Within the town and surrounding area is plenty for visitors to see, do and enjoy; including visitor and cultural attractions and historic buildings like Portslade Manor. The manor is one of the few surviving ruins of the original Norman building that was built in the 12th century and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
