Portree

The town of Portree in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland is built around its harbour and is home to the historic Royal Hotel where Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald met for the last time in 1746. It was during the Jacobite Risings that Fiona MacDonald, aged just 24 met the Prince and aided his escape. The commander of the local militia was her stepfather, who gave her a pass to the mainland for herself, a manservant, an Irish spinning maid (Betty Burke) and a boat's crew of six men. The prince was disguised as Betty Burke. It was arranged that he be taken to Portree and from there taken to Glam on the island of Raasay. Flora was arrested though, brought to London and imprisoned in the Tower of London before the Act of Indemnity was passed in 1747 and she was released.

Portree is a picturesque town offering outstanding views across the port and surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. It is the largest town on the Island and has ample amenities as well as plenty for the visitor to see, do and enjoy. The pier here was designed by Thomas Telford; the noted 18th century Scottish civil engineer, architect, stonemason and canal builder. A key visitor attraction in Portree is the Àros centre which celebrates the island's Gaelic heritage. For film and fiction fans, Portree is known as the home of a fictional professional Quidditch team in Harry Potter and parts of the film ‘Made Of Honor’ were filmed in Portree; viewers will see a sweeping shot of Portree’s main street in the film.
