The large coastal town and resort of Poole in the beautiful county of Dorset is home to a busy port, exceptional beaches and a stunning natural harbour. There has been a settlement here since before the Iron Age with its importance as a port being recorded around the 12th century. The settlement prospered through the trade in wool and by the 18th century, was one of the busiest ports in Britain. Poole was the main departure point for the D-Day landings of the Second World War.
Poole attracts visitors throughout the year who come to enjoy the activities about its harbour, historic sites and places of interest as well as its renowned Blue Flag beaches. With plenty of shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor and cultural attractions, Poole is a popular destination. The port is still a busy place with cross-Channel freight and passenger ferry services and as headquarters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
