Pontllyfni

The small coastal village of Pontllfyni is in Gwynedd, Wales in the Nantlle Valley area that is dotted with similar small settlements and beautiful scenery. The Nantlle Valley developed in the 18th century as a result of the local slate quarries, the largest being the Dorothea and Pen yr Orsedd quarries. From 1865 till 1963, the horse-drawn Nantlle Railway served the quarries and small settlements appeared to accommodate workers. Today the valley attracts visitors who come to enjoy the wonderful walks, varied wildlife habitats and wealth of natural beauty in the flora and fauna.

Pontllfyni has few amenities but is in close proximity to larger settlements that offer additional shopping, dining and leisure choices as well as nearby visitor attractions and places of interest. This small village is where the first recorded meteorite fell in Wales, just before midday on 14th April 1931. According to witnesses, the ground shook and people throughout the Nantlle Valley and the Llŷn peninsula heard a loud rumble thought to be an earthquake. A short time later, a meteorite was found within and John Lloyd Jones felt a huge sense of relief; he had been standing just 10 paces from the place the meteorite landed, making a hole eight or nine inches deep in very hard ground.
