Polegate

The town of Polegate in the county of East Sussex, lies just five miles from Eastbourne and is considered part of the greater area of the popular, seaside resort. There are reminders of early history here like Otteham Court and its chapel that were occupied by monks in the 13th century; but up until the coming of the railways in 1846, Polegate was just a small settlement with a small population. The opening of the railways routes and station though, made Polegate an important place and development, along with an increase in the population and prosperity followed. By 1968, the ‘Cuckoo Line’ railway was closed and is now a picturesque cycle route called the ‘Cuckoo Trail'; with Polegate as the starting point.

Within Polegate and the surrounding areas are a wealth of visitor attractions, historic sites, shopping, amenities, a choice of eateries and pubs. For those with an interest in the history of Polegate and the area, the Tower Windmill, built in 1817 is now a working museum. Outdoor pursuits can be enjoyed on the coast and surrounding countryside with lovely walks, stunning scenery, cycle trails, fishing, horse riding and so much more; along with the magnificent views of the South Downs and famous white cliffs at Beachy Head.
