Petworth

The small market town of Petworth in the charming county of West Sussex is rich with history and heritage. Well preserved buildings here include the magnificent Petworth House; a late 17th century mansion built on a site previously occupied by a fortified manor house and where the 13th century chapel survives today. Petworth House holds an important collection of paintings and sculptures, including works by Turner who was a regular visitor here as well as Van Dyck, Grinling Gibbons, Ben Harms, John Flaxman, John Edward Carew, Louis Laguerre and an incredible terrestrial globe by Emery Molyneux, believed to the only one in the world in its original 1592 state. Set in 700 acres of beautifully landscaped park designed by Capability Brown, Petworth House is well worth taking the time to explore and enjoy.

Petworth offers ample amenities, eateries, pubs and shops, including a large number of antique shops and Petworth has been voted "Antiques Town of the Year". The best place to discover the story of this wonderful town is at the Petworth Cottage Museum with its portrayal of an Edwardian estate worker's life and other exhibits that show how life would have been lived in the past.
