The ancient market town of Petersfield in the county of Hampshire lies within the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within the South Downs National Park, in a region abundant in spectacular natural scenery. The town developed as a coach stop for travellers between London and Portsmouth after its founding in the 12th century by William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester. Prosperity and further growth came with sheep farming and the manufacture of leather and cloth that were traded at the town markets and annual fairs.
Petersfield is built around its two squares, The Square and The Spain, with pretty houses and buildings reflecting the many ages of the town’s development. The twice-weekly market is still held every Wednesday and Saturday in The Square, bringing colour and atmosphere as traders bring their fresh local produce and crafts to sell. Petersfield has plenty of amenities, lots of shops and a good choice of eateries and pubs as well as cultural and visitor attractions and historic sites of interest.
