Peterborough is a cathedral city in the county of Cambridgeshire with a history dating back further than the Bronze Age. The coming of the Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery known as Medeshamstede that would later become what we now know at Peterborough Cathedral. Like many places in the area, the railway brought prosperity in the 19th century and Peterborough became noted for its brick manufacture. Visitors to Peterborough Cathedral are struck by its imposing early English Gothic West Front which, with its three enormous arches. Two queens were buried beneath the paving of this cathedral; Katherine of Aragon and Mary, Queen of Scots, although the remains of Queen Mary were moved by her son to Westminster Abbey when he became King James I.
Today the history is still very much in evidence, alongside the thoroughly modern amenities, cultural and culinary delights, thriving nightlife and attractions. There is so much to see here, including; the Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre where archaeologists found the oldest wheel in Britain and the Peterborough Museum that claims to be this city's most haunted building and has the ghost tours to prove it. Steam engines still run at the Nene Valley Railway and beautiful parks, lakes and the riverside offer visitors a feast of scenery.
