Perth

Perth is a town in in the Scottish council area of Perth and Kinross, in central Scotland, for which it is an administrative centre. The town was previously a key city and royal burgh of the former county of Perthshire. It is located on the banks of the River Tay in an area that is known to have been settled by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers over 8,000 years ago. The nearby Neolithic standing stones date from about 4,000 BC, when the first  farms were developing.

The town's Scone Abbey is home to the Stone of Destiny, where the King of Scots was traditionally crowned, which emphasised the significance of the city during the days when it was a 'capital' in all but name, where the Scottish royalty regularly held court. The Royal Burgh status was granted to the town by King William The Lion in the early 12th century and it became one of the richest and most luxurious burghs in Scotland.

Perth is no a popular retail centre with a main shopping centre on a pedestrianised high street, housing a good variety of independent and specialist shops, making it a a busy stopping point for tourists and a good destination from which to explore the area.
