The small seaside town of Perranporth in the scenic county of Cornwall honours Saint Piran, the patron saint of tin miners and considered the patron saint of Cornwall as well. It is said that St Piran found himself here after being cast to sea by the Irish King, being accused of having mystical powers. The saint survived, promoted Christianity and joined by many Christian converts, went on to found the Abbey of Lanpiran. Saint Piran was the instigator of the tin mining industry that brought growth to this area; legend says that the saint’s black hearthstone had tin smelt out of it, rising to the top in a white cross shape and revealing that there was tin-bearing ore here. Saint Piran's Flag is a white cross on a black background and the 5th of March sees the town celebrate St. Piran’s day with parades, song, and dance.
Perranporth has plenty of amenities, a good choice of shops and eateries, pubs and a large number of visitor attractions along with a choice of beaches too. The beaches are found below the majestic mountain of rocky cliffs to the south and to the north, adjacent to sand dunes. Visitors come to enjoy the abundant activities and attractions at this seaside resort, including scenic coastal walks, fun and activities on the water with surfing on some of the best waves in the country and sailing as well as snorkelling in and around the coves and caves.
