Penicuik

The village of Penicuik in Midlothian, Scotland is a ‘planned village’ in a picturesque spot on the River North Esk that flows through Mid and East Lothian. The village was built around the paper mill that was originally established by Agnes Campbell in 1709. By 1770, the mill was expanded with the arrival of the Cowan family and this led to the need for homes for the workers. Sir James Clerk, the builder of nearby Penicuik House planned the village that by 1800 had a population or 1,700. Penicuik in recent years was home to the Edinburgh Crystal works.

Pencuick offers ample village amenities and is within easy reach of other towns that offer additional choices for shopping, dining and leisure. The village has long been a place for visitors and in the past was where travellers rested after crossing the old toll bridge that used to cross the river. Some of the ancient travellers’ inns are still here today; long after the old toll bridge has been replaced with the Pomathorn Bridge. The Crown and the Royal are two examples that because of their purpose, advertise the patronage of many characters from Scottish 18th century history, including Bonnie Prince Charlie and Burke and Hare.
