The commuter town of Oxted in the county of Surrey has grown from its largely agricultural past when the landscape had only a scattering of homes, to a thriving town that prospered with the coming of the railways in the late 19th century. A new centre was created around the railway station. Mention of Oxted first occurs in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is referred to by its old name Acstede that translates as 'the place where oaks grew'. The entry also mentions a church as being established here. The oldest church in Oxted is St. Mary’s Church that dates from at least Norman times and is thought to occupy a site where an earlier church was constructed.
Visitors to Oxted today will find an attractive town that continues to prosper and has attractive architecture. Ample amenities are here along with a good choice of quality restaurants and eateries, pubs, lovely parks and open spaces, independent shops and cultural as well as historic sites and attractions, in and around the town.
