The market town of Oswestry is in the county of Shropshire, just five miles from the Anglo-Welsh border. This unique location has led to Oswestry becoming known for its mixed Welsh and English heritage. It is a vibrant border town that nestles between the patchwork plains of Shropshire and the hills of Wales. Since The Middle Ages, Oswestry has been a major trading area for merchants from both sides of the border. It is through this trade and the markets for wool and cattle, that prosperity came to this busy town.
Market days are still a huge draw for Oswestry but there is so much more for the visitor to enjoy beyond the shopping and atmosphere. Local attractions in and around Oswestry include: nearby Whittington Castle, the Cambrian Railway Museum, a huge number public houses offering real ales and a wealth of historic sites.
St Oswald's Church dates back nearly 1,000 years and boasts a Norman tower dating from 1085. Oswestry is noted for the large number of pubs and it is wondered if that is responsible for the fact that there are so many churches here too? There are 13 churches in total.
Recently voted one of the ‘coolest places to live in England’, the locals say this is due to: “the combination of a charming medieval town and an eclectic mix of independent shops and fine eating establishments that creates an ambience that is special.”
