The market town of Ossett in West Yorkshire that was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a settlement but experienced growth through mining after the 14th century. By the 19th century there were a large number of pits in Ossett mining the Gawthorpe and Silkstone seams and employing a large number of the citizens of Ossett. The town was also known for recycling woollen garments, an industry referred to as the ‘shoddy’ industry at Ossett's small mills. For a short period of time during the 19th century, Ossett became a spa town but in the 1870’s the spa closed and aspirations to become as famous as Harrogate were dashed.
Ossett continues to hold its colourful market on Tuesdays and Fridays and offers ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs along with nearby visitor attractions and historic sites including; the local Trinity Church consecrated in 1865 with a spire which rises to 226 feet and can be seen for miles around and unusually, a red phone booth in Ossett town centre that has been granted grade II listed status.
