Orton

The small market village of Orton in the picturesque county of Cumbria lies in the upper Lune Valley and has been established since the reign of Edward I in the 13th century. Orton is surrounded by beautiful scenery, with rolling countryside and has been described by Alfred Wainwright as one of the loveliest villages in the area. The setting is idyllic; with views over Orton Scar and the Howgills, the charm of the village with its bridges across the two becks that enclose a small central green and the pretty 17th and 18th century cottages.

There is a shop here as well as a pub and tea rooms but few other amenities, although these are plentiful in nearby, more developed towns. Orton village has a popular monthly farmers market that attracts many visitors to the village as well as over 40 local farmers, growers, producers and artisan craftsmen.. There are sites of interest, historic buildings and visitor attracting within the village and nearby, including; the two halls that lie at the south end of Orton, the Elizabethan Petty Hall and opposite, Orton Hall built in 1662 as well as the 13th century All Saints Church with its 16th century perpendicular tower. For those looking for lovely walks, Orton offers Wainwrights 'Coast to Coast' walk. The walk passes through the village and heading over Orton Scar.
