The market town of Olney, located in the county of Buckinghamshire, is a popular tourist destination well known for the Olney Pancake Race and the Olney Hymns (Amazing Grace) by John Newton and William Cowper; the poet William Cowper lived in Olney between 1768 and 1786 and John Newton who became its curate, in 1764. Their story and the history of the local area is told and commemorated in the Cowper museum in the Market Place. Olney found its prosperity at the heart of the bobbin lace making industry in the 18th century and the ‘Olney Lace’ from here was much prized by Royalty. Handmade lace is still produced locally and the Museum contains an extensive collection.
Olney's town centre has retained its 18th century charm and character and adds a wealth of attractions for visitors to enjoy; antique shops, historic sites, a choice of pubs as well as restaurants and cafes. The market is still at the heart of the town’s culture, with market day on Thursdays. Olney lies on the River Great Ouse, providing picturesque walks and scenery as well as ample opportunity for outdoor pursuits.
