Old Wolverton

Old Wolverston was medieval in origin. The name means 'Wulfhere's estate', and the medieval Ridge and Furrow farming pattern is still evident in the nearby fields. The remains of the Norman Motte and Bailey castle are also still visible beside the church, which features an Saxon tower. The vicarage house neighbouring the church was built in 1729 and features stonework from the former 16th century manor house in its doorway. The village is on the route of the Grand Union Canal, with the name "Old Wolverton" referring to the east bank of the canal, and Wolverton Mill, to the west, which is the site of the old watermill.
