The historic town of Okehampton is in the attractive county of Devon and lies on the River Okement in a picturesque region of natural beauty at the edge of Dartmoor. There has long been a settlement here with the first settlers arriving during the Bronze Age. During Saxon rule after the 7th century, the town is recorded as a place where slaves were freed at a cross-road. The Normans conquered next and Baldwin de Brion was the first Norman Sheriff to be established at Okehampton Castle and later still, Henry VIII seized the estate. The castle ruins are substantial and stand just outside the town centre. Prosperity came with the tin and wool industries which can be further explored along with other eras in Okehampton’s past, at the Museum of Dartmoor Life.
