Norwich is the county town of Norfolk — the fifth largest ceremonial county in England, which is situated on the East Coast of England, overlooking the North Sea and The Wash. This low-lying and predominantly rural part of the country is probably best known for The Norfolk Broads National Park, which is a scenic network of rivers and lakes that help to drain the former marshland into the sea via The Wash.
Norwich's population is one-thirtieth the size of London's and, along with neighbours King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth, it is notable for being a tranquil city with a restful pace of life. The county's low population density and traditional outlook make the area a very popular destination for country holidays. Historical sites, such as those in the city centre of Norwich, contribute greatly the tourism of the county.
Just a few examples of the many sites and attractions of the local area are: Norwich Cathedral, Dragon Hall, Norwich Castle & Art Gallery — with its extensive landscaped gardens, Plantation Garden, Go Ape! High Wire Forest Adventure — which is especially popular with older children and young adults, and the nine-mile, narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway.
Norwich was also the United Kingdom's eighth most prosperous shopping destination of 2006. The city boasts a large open-air market, which is open six days per week, and a selection of high street shopping areas, in addition to a good selection of bars, pubs and restaurants.
