Northwich

Northwich is an attractive market town in the county of Cheshire where the River Weaver meets the River Dane. The salt pans in the area around Northwich made it a centre of the salt industry that has been in use since Roman times; salt was very important in Roman society and there is archaeological evidence of a Roman auxiliary fort within the area. Sadly, subsidence has led to the collapse of the old salt mines. Despite its long history, Northwich is lacking in ancient buildings due to the combined effect of the subsidence and the constant pumping of brine from beneath the district.

Still a market town today, Northwich has a busy shopping centre, a choice of eateries, pubs and places of interest. There are two key dates in the calendar here; during the August Bank Holiday weekend, the Northwich Festival is held featuring music and sport; with the main event being the UK Strongman-North Competition. Each May, The Thundersprint motorcycling event is held, attracting vast crowds over the two days and is said to be the world's biggest street bike party.
