The town of Normanton in West Yorkshire is in a location that has been of strategic importance through history; it was originally surrounded by a moat and later, in Norman times was the site of an enclosed settlement. Normanton was at the mercy of the Normans and William the Conqueror's ‘scorched earth’ campaign in the north left the area open to exploitation by his Lords. By Victorian times, with the coming of the railways, the town prospered and Normanton station was one of the most important stations in the north of England; even Queen Victoria stopped over in The Station Hotel. The town developed too on the back of the coal and brick industries with local clay in demand and the railways providing the all important transport infrastructure for both national and local industries. At one point there were four brickworks in and around Normanton with the Normanton Brick Company at nearby Altofts still in operation today.
Normanton today is seen as a popular commuter suburb of the 'Greater Leeds' area, providing ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as lovely open spaces.
Within the town is All Saints Church, built in the perpendicular style and believed to have existed since at least 1256 and the nearby Newland Nature Reserve is a wonderful oasis that was created on the Newland estate, a small township on the banks of the River Calder that has existed since 1213.
