Newton Stewart

Newton Stewart is a burgh town in the county of Dumfries and Galloway, in the south of Scotland. It is prettily settled on either side of the River Cree and was founded as the "New Town of Stewart" in the 17th century by William Stewart, a son of the 2nd Earl of Galloway. The town is known as "Gateway to the Galloway Hills’’ and is a prominent market town serving the Wigtownshire area, and tourist town, popular for the numerous nature trails in the nearby Galloway Forest Park. The town's bridge is notable as the location where Robert the Bruce forded the river on a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Ninian in 1329.
