Newton-le-Willows is a town within the Borough of St Helens, in Merseyside, England. It is situated about half-way between Manchester and Liverpool. The old centre of Newton is an attractive residential area with a number of Georgian buildings and still retains a village atmosphere with several small local shops serving the local community.
The fields between Newton and Winwick are known to be the site of one of the last battles of the Second English Civil War, and possibly also of the Anglo-Saxon Battle of Brunanburh.
Haydock Park Racecourse is one of the nearby local landmarks of the area, as are the Newton Viaduct, and the Sankey Viaduct which is known colloquially as "the Nine Arches". Newton is particularly interesting to walkers with an interest in the history of the railroad and is a very scenic vantage point from which to explore the wider areas of Merseyside and Lancashire.
