The small market town of Newton-le-Willows is in Merseyside and has a history dating back to at least 55BC when ancient Celts created a burial mound at Castle Hill. Huge change came though in the 19th when the railway industry came to be and what was a small village at the time, became home to the famous Vulcan Foundry in 1831; the foundry went on to become one of the world's foremost locomotive manufacturers. The Viaduct Foundry came along soon after and became the London and North Western Railway's principal wagon works. The two historic railway stations in Newton-le-Willows are amongst the oldest railway stations still in existence.
Newton-le-Willows today has an old centre on the A49 road with Georgian buildings, residential houses, a High Street with small local shops and the parish church; whilst to the west of Newton is Earlestown; an area that was developed around the time of the Industrial Revolution. The Earlestown development offers excellent amenities, a new town hall, much more shopping and the town’s market with around 200 stalls, making it one of the largest in the region.
