The large market town of Newton Abbot in the attractive county of Devon lies at the head of the beautiful Teign Estuary with the River Lemon passing through the centre of the town. The town’s major period of growth, development and prosperity came with the arrival of the railways during the Victorian era when Newton Abbot became home to the South Devon Railway Locomotive Works. The already busy market town with its trade in leather and wool was now a place of industry. Alongside the railway industry grew others catering for it; a timber yard, iron and brass foundries and engineering works.
Newton Abbot today is more than its railways, with a fantastic racecourse nearby as well as a host of historic sites, cultural and visitor attractions and the incredible natural beauty of the area. The town itself offers plenty of great shopping, a good choice of restaurants, eateries, bars and traditional pubs. Visitors come to enjoy the area as well as the attractions that include; the weekly markets, attractive parks, scenic walks and a calendar of events that includes the historic ‘Cheese and Onion Fayre’ every September that honours Saint Leonard with colourful celebration.
