Newport(Isle of Wight)

Newport is the county town of the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. It offers two shopping centres and a good choice of entertainment venues, along with a vibrant cultural scene — particularly at Newport Quay, which has several art galleries and an art centre.

The town is founded on the site of an earlier Roman settlement, which was probably named Medina like the river that flows through the town. Two Roman villas have been discovered, one of which, known as the Newport Roman Villa, is fully excavated and open to the public.

Popular attractions on the island include Carisbrooke Castle, the famous views at The Needles and Alum Bay, the 108 km Isle of Wight Coastal Path, the Blackgang Chine theme park, the Isle of Wight Zoo, and Yarmouth Castle, to name only a few. The Isle of Wight is also a haven for wildlife and sites of geological and natural importance. It is one of the few places in England where the red squirrel is flourishing.
