The historic town of Newhaven is in the county of East Sussex and home to the Newhaven Fort that is the largest work of defence ever constructed in Sussex. This landmark is now a popular, visitor attraction where you can explore its past. The defensive history of this area dates back to the Bronze Age when a large enclosed fort was built on the cliff top, later in history, the Romans arrived and they too built a fort on the site. A fine example of an English fortification, Newhaven Fort has the sights, sounds and even the smells of the period, through a range of exhibitions and audio-visual presentations. The vast, echoing tunnels built into the chalk cliffs, the ramparts, cliff-top gun emplacements and panoramic views of the South Downs and Sussex Coast make this the award-winning attraction it is today.
Newhaven is a port that lies at the mouth of the River Ouse on the English Channel coast, offering ferry services to France. The cliffs here are of geological significance and interest, containing many Santonian and Campanian fossilsa as well as flora and fauna. This picturesque setting contrasts the stark cliffs with the open land that surrounds Newhaven and is part of the South Downs National Park. Shopping, restaurants, pubs, cultural activities, attractions and historic sites are plentiful in this bustling town.
