Newbury is the principal town in West Berkshire, in England. It is situated on the banks of the River Kennet, and the on the course of the Kennet and Avon Canal, making it a very popular visiting place for those passing through on barge holidays. The River Lambourn and the River Enborne enclose the town at its northern and southern boundaries, while the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds it, featuring Beacon Hill, Combe Gibbet, and Watership Down, which was made famous by the Richard Adams novel of the same name. Newbury features many 17th century buildings in its town centre and is probably best known for its racecourse.
The Normans founded Newbury as a new borough following the Norman invasion, from which the town got its name. However, it has been established that there was a settlement in the location since the Mesolithic era. The town was used by royalty on hunting trips during its early centuries, and later grew in prominence in the cloth production industry, then later again as a half-way point between London and Bath. The town is still known for its good choice of holiday accommodation, pubs, restaurants, and entertainment venues, as well as for excellent transport links that allow access to much of the English South-East, including London.
Popular attractions in the area include Windsor Castle, Bispham Abbey, Donnington Castle and Legoland, to name only a few.
