Newbiggin-on-Lune is a village in the east of the famous tourist region of Cumbria, in England. It neighbours Kirkby Stephen and the magnificent Smardale Gill viaduct. This is a rather overlooked area of England, perhaps as a result of its ambiguous position in the former county of Westmorland, which was incorporated into Cumbria in 1974. The area now falls within the Eden District of Cumbria, and is very aptly named. Geographically, it is located in a breathtakingly beautiful and very accessible, yet under-represented, area between the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with its own highland range — the Howgill Fells — to boast of.
The magnificent landscape of peaks and valleys, along with the sleepy tranquillity of the town might give a passing impression of a place that tends not to cater to tourists. But far from being a remote and inaccessible little place in the wilderness, Newbiggin-on-Lune offers a very pleasant and welcoming base from which to explore this inspiring part of England in comfort. There are several quality Bed & Breakfasts in the town, as well as a choice of self-catering cottages and guest houses. Trout fishing and picture walks are very popular activities for which people visit the area, and local sites of interest include the 14th century Smardale Hall and the historic former county town of Appleby-in-Westmorland.
