Newbiggin-by-the-Sea

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a small North Sea coastal town, in the county of Northumberland, in an area known as the ‘Northumbrian Heritage Coast’; honoured for its miles of exquisite beaches and bays. More than 50 of England’s finest historic castles are in this county, including; Bamburgh, Alnwick and Lindisfarne on Holy Island. In the 14th century, Newbiggin was a very important maritime centre, called upon to support Edward III in his campaigns against the Scots. Once a coal mining town as well as an important port for shipping grain, Newbiggin-by-the-sea remains, at its heart, a small, friendly fishing port that still uses traditional coble boats.

 

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea offers visitors a glimpse at the past in this place where the history is evidenced in the unusual architecture of buildings that reflect the changing lifestyles and industry. Newbiggin can be best explored by following the trail that highlights the key features and history. As early as 1828, Newbiggin was a popular beach resort and can lay claim to having the oldest working lifeboat station in the UK.
