The former mining town and port of Neston is in the county of Cheshire has a varied history with mining shafts dug out beneath the River Dee and a port lost when the Dee silted up. The River Dee is still a major feature here and serves as a feeding ground for ducks, geese and sea birds, attracting nature lovers, walkers and bird watchers. Other historic events in Neston include the granting of the market in 1728, the opening of the colliery in 1760 with its shafts dug beneath the Dee and the opening of the still-popular Ness Botanic Gardens in 1898.
Visitors today will find amenities and shops, eateries and pubs as well as historic and cultural sites and buildings, including the Grade II listed St Mary's and St Helen's Church. The Doomsday Book mentions a priest at Neston and the earliest written evidence of the church on this site dates from around 1170. Evidence of an earlier church was found in the 19th century when fragments of pre-Conquest crosses were found and revealed to be Viking Age in origin. These fragments are now mounted at the west end of the church.
