Nefyn

The small town of Nefyn in Gwynedd, Wales is nestled between mighty hills and a picturesque coastline with its popular sandy beaches. As evidenced by a still-visible Iron Age hillfort that overlooks Nefyn, the history here goes back to at least 300 BC. Nefyn was an important trading town in the 13th century and Edward I celebrated here after his victory over the Welsh with a jousting tournament in 1284. There is a rich maritime heritage here too with the economy helped by fishing, most notably for herring, that was at its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries. The herring trade has been of such importance to Nefyn that it is even depicted on the town's coat-of-arms, that bears three herrings.

Nefyn has some amenities, shops and eateries and is within easy reach of larger towns offering additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure. Visitors come for the wonderful landscapes of the area and choice of outdoor activities including golf, fishing, cycling, riding and walking. Just behind the town is the small hilltop settlement, Mynydd Nefyn that offers some of the best views of the area; overlooking the town to the north, Pwllheli and Llanbedrog to the south and on a clear day, as far as the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland to the west.
