The market town of Neath in Glamorgan, Wales lies along the River Neath with a history dating back to Roman times; when this was the place to cross the river. There are historic reminders of Neath’s long history, with the ruins of 12th century Neath Abbey as well as what remains of the Norman, timber motte and bailey castle near the Abbey. From the 14th century Neath began to prosper and the river bridge was built. Trade followed and regular markets were held. The coming of the Industrial Age in the 18th century and the railways in the 19th century saw the greatest change in Neath’s history as it formed part of the industrial heartland where coal mining and heavy metal refining were key industries.
Neath is a popular destination with plenty of shops and amenities, pubs and restaurants as well as visitor attractions, historic sites, scenic countryside and activities in the surrounding area.
