Nantwich

The market town of Nantwich lies on the banks of the River Weaver in the county of Cheshire. The suffix 'wich' denotes the presence of brine springs and the settlement here dates back to Roman times; when salt from the area, as both a preservative and condiment, was supplied to the garrisons at Chester and Stoke-on-Trent. The Domesday Book records Nantwich as having eight salt houses.  The salt industry was at its peak in the late 16th century by which time, there were 216 salt houses; the last salt house closed in 1858. Nantwich was burnt to the ground by the Normans and almost destroyed in the Great Fire of Nantwich in 1583 and yet this ancient town has a vast number of historic buildings. St Mary's Church here is one of the finest medieval churches in the UK and is known as the 'Cathedral of South Cheshire'.

Nantwich is a wonderful town for visitors to explore, with its wonderful historic sites, pleasant walks along the River Weaver and the Shropshire Union Canal or around Nantwich Lake. In the narrow winding lanes of the town centre, you will find pretty old timber-framed buildings. The Nantwich Museum is the perfect place to discover more about the rich history of this area. With pubs, eateries, specialist shops and visitor attractions, Nantwich is a pleasure to visit.
