Nairn is a former burgh town in the Highland council area of the far northern coast of Scotland, around 16 miles to the east of Inverness and was once the county town of the former county of Nairn, or Nairnshire. The town developed early as a fishing port and market town but is now best known as a seaside resort, with two golf courses, a theatre, a small museum. The town follows a very long and narrow main street and surrounds a harbour built by Thomas Telford. There was once a time when the town's length caused a divide in dialect between the Scottish Gaelic- and Scots-speaking residents, a fact that King James VI of Scotland, liked to boast of when he relocated to London upon becoming King of England.
