Munlochy

The village of Munlochy is in the scenic Ross and Cromarty area of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland; a region renown for its breathtaking contrasts and spectacular landscapes as well as some of the oldest rock formations in Europe that date from the Cambrian and Precambrian age.  The village is at the head of Munlochy Bay and growth and development came with quarrying in the area that was at its peak in the late 18th century when stone was required for the building of Fort George on the far side of the Moray Firth. With the coming of the railways in 1894, Munlochy gained a station on the Fortrose branch of the Highland Railway that has since closed; although with the completion of the Kessock Bridge in 1982, Munlochy is now within easy reach of Inverness by road.

Munlochy has some amenities and is within reach of further developed towns and cities offering additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure. Within the beautiful area around the village are ample natural features and visitor attractions to draw visitors throughout the year, including Munlochy Bay that is a breeding area for birds. The Bay offers a variety of birds, a diverse range of habitats; including tidal sand and mud along with salt flats and this of course also makes the area a perfect place for visiting bird watchers. Munlochy Bay has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. To the west of Munlochy is the visitor attraction that is popular with all sorts of visitors, the Black Isle Brewery. Many people come to Munlochy to visit the well-known ‘Clootie Well’ just north of the village; where pilgrims have long come to leave strips of cloth as offerings to cure illness.
