Motherwell

The large town of Motherwell in Lanarkshire, Scotland has been an industrial heartland, set amidst the beautiful scenery of the Clyde Valley and Strathclyde Country Park on the nearby River Clyde. Strathclyde Park is a popular destination for visitors, offering attractions, woodland walks and water sports on the artificially created loch. Motherwell is one of the largest towns in Lanarkshire, settled since ancient times and grew from its reliance on agriculture to become a major producer of steel. The coming of the railways brought with it the need for engineering works and a large number of engineering companies were established here, specialising in the production of munitions, bridge components and trams. By 1959 work began on a vast new steelworks, Ravenscraig, with its water towers that dominated the skyline. Only the Dalzell Plate Mill remains today and Motherwell is no longer referred to as ‘Steelopolis’, although Ravenscraig has the honour of having been one of the longest continuous casting, hot rolling, steel production facilities in the world before it closed.

Motherwell offers ample amenities and plenty of shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor and cultural attractions. Exhibits and information about mining, railways and steel production are brought to life through foundry and street scenes, glimpses of domestic life, talking figures and interactive technology.
